Prepositions often confused

To and At.
(a) To.

  • Not OK: We come at school every morning.
  • Say: We come to school every morning.

(b) At.

  • Not OK: Chewbacca is standing to the door.
  • Say: Chewbacca is standing at the door.


To and Till
.
(a) To.

  • Not OK: Jar Jar walked till the river and back.
  • Say: Jar Jar walked to the river and back.

(b) Till.

  • Not OK: The Jedi will stay here to next month.
  • Say: The Jedi will stay here till next month.

Use to with distance, and till (until) with time

In and At.
(a) In.

  • Not OK: Bail Organa has a flat at Alderaan.
  • Say: Bail Organa has a flat in Alderaan.

(b) At.

  • Not OK: Yoda is staying in the Galactic City.
  • Say: Yoda is staying at the Galactic City.

In and Into.
(a) In.

  • Not OK: Qui-Gon Jinn spent all the day into his room.
  • Say: Qui-Gon Jinn spent all the day in his room.

(b) Into.

  • Not OK: Padme came in the room and sat down.
  • Say: Padme came into the room and sat down.



Incorrect Omissions

Ask for a thing, not ask a thing.

  • Not OK: She came and asked his lightsaber.
  • Say: She came and asked for his lightsaber.

Dispose/get rid of a thing, not dispose/get rid a thing.

  • Not OK: Watto dispose/get rid all his junks.
  • Say: Watto dispose/get rid of all his junks.

Dream of a thing, not dream a thing.

  • Not OK: Darth Vader dream glory and riches.
  • Say: Darth Vader dreams of glory and riches.

Explain to a person, not explain a person.

  • Not OK: She explained me the matter.
  • Say: She explained the matter to me.

Knock at the door, not knock the door.

  • Not OK: Who is knocking the door?
  • Say: Who is knocking at the door?

Listen to a person or thing, not listen a person or thing.

  • Not OK: They were listening the music.
  • Say: They were listening to the music.



Using the Wrong Prepositions

Absorbed (very much interested) in, not at.

  • Not OK: Master Windu was absorbed at his work.
  • Say: Master Windu was absorbed in his work.

Accuse of, not for.

  • Not OK: She accused Senator Palpatine for treason.
  • Say: She accused Senator Palpatine of treason.

Accustomed to, not with.

  • Not OK: I’m accustomed with Tatooine’s hot weather.
  • Say: I’m accustomed to Tatooine’s hot weather.

Afraid of, not from.

  • Not OK: The Podracer is afraid from the Tuscan Rider.
  • Say: The Podracer is afraid of the Tuscan Rider.

Aim at, not on or against.

  • Not OK: Han Solo aimed on (or against) the target.
  • Say: Han Solo aimed at the target.

Note: Use the preposition at to denote direction, throw at, shout at, fire at, shoot at. Shoot (without the at) means to kill

  • He shot a clone.

Angry with, not against.

  • Not OK:Obi-Wan was angry against Anakin.
  • Say: Obi-Wan was angry with Anakin.

We get angry ‘with’ a person but ‘at’ a thing. For instance,

  • He was angry at the weather not with the weather!

This could be applied to: annoyed with, vexed with, indignant with a person, but at a thing.

Anxious (troubled) about, not for.

  • Not OK: They’re anxious for her safety.
  • Say:They’re anxious about her safety.

Note: Anxious meaning wishing very much takes for.

  • Parents are anxious for their children’s success.

Arrive at, not to.

  • Not OK: Darth Maul arrived to the village at night.
  • Say: Darth Maul arrived at the village at night.

Note: Use arrive in with countries and large cities. Lando has arrived in Cloud City (or Alderaan: Dagobah, etc.)

Ashamed of, not from.

  • Not OK: Jar Jar Bink is now ashamed from his conduct.
  • Say: Jar Jar Bink is now ashamed of his conduct.
